AC Bellinzona promoted to Swiss Super League

Swiss Challenge League champions AC Bellinzona have been promoted to the Swiss Super League for the first time in their history after beating FC Wil 2-1 in the promotion play-off.

Goals from Simone Grippo and Hicham Mahou gave Bellinzona a 2-0 lead at half-time, and although Wil pulled one back through Josias Lukembila, Bellinzona held on to secure promotion.

Bellinzona will now play in the Swiss Super League for the first time since their formation in 1904.

They will be joined by FC Winterthur, who won the other promotion play-off against Schaffhausen.

Bellinzona's promotion is a remarkable achievement for the club, who were founded in 1904 and have never played in the Swiss Super League before. They have won the Swiss Challenge League twice, in 2008 and 2018, but have always failed to win promotion via the play-offs.

This time, however, they were able to get the job done, and they will now be looking to establish themselves in the Swiss Super League and make a name for themselves on the big stage.
